Customize Email Address With Own Domain In Windows Live

You want a cool email address such as yourname@yourdomain.xxx? You can have it in many ways. Now I’m going to share this to you by using Windows Live. Before I start, I want to thanked Mas Eko to help me resolving my problem with this.

The domain that I’m going to use in this tutorial is www.co.cc, a great free domain service. After that register for alternative dns settings here (you need some other dns settings that’s not pprovided in www.co.cc). To register your own domain with windows live, you can click here. I suggest you to use Internet Explorer as your browser to register, because last time I have some problems by using Mozilla Firefox to do this.

After creating your domain with .co.cc (or whatever domain you want), go to “Domain setup”, and choose “Manage DNS”. Make 5 name server, that will be used later. Put: ns1.us.editdns.net, ns2.us.editdns.net, ns3.us.editdns.net, ns1.eu.editdns.net and ns2.eu.editdns.net for the name servers.

Now, go to EditDNS. After you register, add your domain there.

After it’s done, you can see your domain name under the domain categories, then click “edit”. When you’re inside, change the NS type to [EU+US], and just delete the record name with “A” type. See picture below

Don’t close your EditDNS tab bar, you’re not done yet with it. Okay, domain dns settings done, now is the time to register it to Windows Live, click here. IMPORTANT!: I hardly suggest you to use Internet Explorer when you want to register your domain to Windows Live.

When you’re inside the Windows Live Admin Center, click “Get Started” and after that you can put your domain name there. For the mail service, choose “Set up Windows Live Hotmail for my domain” and continue. Now, if you have any Windows Live ID such as yourname@hotmail.com andelse, you can choose “Sign in with existing Windows Live ID”, if you don’t, you must make one in order to access your Admin Center.

Now you’re inside the Domain Setting, you haven’t change any DNS yet that’s why you can see a lot of pending status. Now, you’re gonna put some configuration in EditDNS.

If you don’t know how to put it in your EditDNS, look at some information below.

MX Record Configuration (Required)

DNS Record Type: MX -> put MX below “Type” menu in EditDNS.
Host: yourdomain.xxx -> put your domain below “Record name” menu in EditDNS.
MX Server: xxx (the value is given) ->put this value below “IP/Host” menu in EditDNS.
TTL: 3600 or 1 hour -> put 3600 (default value) below “TTL” menu in EditDNS.
Priority: 0 (or High Priority) -> put 10 (advisable) below “AUX” menu in EditDNS.

Sender ID Configuration (Recomended, allows destination server to trust mail originating from your domain using Sender Policy Framework{SPF})

DNS Record Type: TXT -> put TXT below “Type” menu in EditDNS.
Host: yourdomain.xxx -> put your domain below “Record name” menu in EditDNS.
Value: xxx (value is given) -> put this value below “IP/Host” menu in EditDNS.
TTL: 3600 or 1 hour -> put 3600 (default value) below “TTL” menu in EditDNS.
For AUX, you can put either 1 or 10 in EditDNS, I put 10 for mine.

Messengger Configuration (Recomended, so you can sign in Windows Live Messengger)

DNS Record Type: SRV -> put SRV below “Type” menu in EditDNS.
Host: This is not your domain anymore, be careful. Put everything that’s written there below your “Record      name” menu in EditDNS.
Value: This is a bit tricky, put everything except “10″ there below your “IP/Host” menu in EditDNS. So, if your value is: “10 2 5061 federation.messenger.msn.com”, put “2 5061 federation.messenger.msn.com” below your “IP/Host” menu. How about the “10″? put that below “AUX” menu :)

The last thing is Custom Address, but I think it won’t be neccessary since you can login from http://mail.live.com.

After you done all of the steps below, wait for a while. When your serive is active, you can start add member accounts and even open membership. Meaning, anyone can register. For me, I make it private :) When it’s active, you can start log in your new account (after you add in Windows Live Admin Center -> Member Accounts) from http://mail.live.com.

If it’s your first log in, you’ll need to fill some information (which is quite annoying). And you can start using it, even with the WLMessengger. Well, again, I’m sorry if my English isn’t so great, just trying to share, Cheers!
